CD Review – Cherub – Bleed Gold, Piss Excellence

image1Cherub’s new album, Bleed Gold, Piss Excellence, is everything one would come to expect from the synth pop mavens. Eleven tracks of pure pop bliss that span everything from nu disco to 90’s electro soul. This is not heavy music. It is fun music. I always admire when a band can resist the need to adapt and can embrace the formula that has made them successful in the first place. It takes a real confidence to celebrate the proven. We always credit those willing to take risks and breaking sonic territory, but seldom praise those who have the courage to just remain themselves.

The duo consisting of Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber do just that. They stand up and unapologetically smash you in the face with nugget after nugget of pop perfection. “Signs”, featuring trap rap legend T.I , is literally one of the catchiest songs I have heard in years. The combination of Studio 54 guitar hooks and keyboard wizardry will have you stomping your foot ad nauseum. The lifting melody and light hearted lyrics of “Very Rare” will put a smile on your face quicker than the first warmth of Spring. Nostalgia laden ballad “Dedicated to the Bubble” will instantly teleport you back to an era where the likes of Spandau Ballet ruled the radio.
It makes sense that these guys met while boogie boarding in a Nashville waterpark. They have continually brought that spirit and breeziness to their music and I, for one, could not be happier. Sometimes you need a simple, pleasant distraction and Cherub provide exactly that. Feel good music with no strings attached. Make sure to catch them on the #YourGirlfriendAlreadyBoughtTickets tour as it rolls through Buffalo on February 14th and Syracuse on the 15th.
