Dopapod and Space Carnival Get Weird With Ithaca

Dopapod and Ithaca’s own Space Carnival rocked the foundation of The Haunt on April 12th. Both bands are enjoying expanding success and it’s no surprise. They are each mega talented and all in all, they are PERFECT companion bands!

First up was Space Carnival. They are a groove rock jam band and a bunch of fun. If you know them, chances are you love them. They played choice cuts off of their debut album, Drawn In To the Sun. Both the tracks “Moon Boots” and “Entree the Giant” have undeniable booty shaking grooves. It’s fun to see the energy kickup for these two songs. The most exciting part of Space Carnival’s set? I have good news. These guys have been busy working on new material and it is tasty, assuring the future is bright in Space! They shared their newest gem, “Prince Rebus.” This new number starts smooth and slinky with a strong celestial quality to it, then turns dance party jam for a bit, and rounds back to travelling the cosmos for the finish. Space Carnival finished a fun set with a cover of Smash Mouth’s mega-hit, “All Star.”

Time for Dopapod and there are so many things to like about this band. The first half of their set seemed to hover around their 2014 release, Never Odd or Even, before venturing elsewhere. I enjoy what they can do with a fairly simple melody, like the song “Psycho Nature,” and where they can take it and let it peak with power.

Dan Africano, bass player from John Brown’s Body, sat in for an intense “French Bowling.” Actually, the whole set was intense, with no down time. They finished off the night with a foundation shaking cover of “Rock n Roll Ain’t Noise Polution” by AC/DC, followed by the tension and release classic, “Onionhead,” before returning to a reprise of “Rock n Roll Ain’t Noise Polution.” Dopapod closed their performance with a lengthy encore of “FABA.” One thing I did notice at the end, and this is the second time this has happened to me – the actual setlist played varies greatly from the paper setlist taped to the stage floor. That piece of paper on the stage is no setlist. It is more of a “suggestion list.”

I could appreciate the contrast of watching Space Carnival open the show, paying their dues and climbing the ladder of success, at a point that Dopapod was at a few years back. And in a few years Space Carnival will be where Dopapod is now and Dopapod will be . . .
