Just when you think a local tradition couldn’t get any better. Tomorrow night, Funk n’ Waffles’ downtown Monday night Dead night will feature the mad hatter of the piano himself, Marco Benevento! First, Pearly Baker’s Best perform a Grateful Dead set, and then Marco and his band will kick off their 2017 East Coast tour with a special Syracuse performance.
Benevento is known for his psychedelic spin on experimental jazz piano, and a sound enhanced by a unique set of pickups on his piano. Rolling Stone magazine called him “a psych-jazz guru” and one reviewer described him as “the Mad Hatter of Wonderland, with his audience as Alice.”
A healthy portion of his career has been spent along side Joe Russo, of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. “Benevento’s concerts are aimed for those that want to be injected with bliss,” Diandra Rivera wrote in New York Theatre Guide.
I tip my mad hat to you Funk n’ Waffles! First it was David Gans, then it was Melvin Seals, now Marco. What’s next? Monday night Dead night to feature Jerry’s missing finger? I wouldn’t put it past them. Benevento, who lives in the Catskills, added the Jan. 30 date to the beginning of his East Coast Tour to kick it off in Syracuse. Funk n’ Waffles downtown holds 200 people. This is about about as close up and personal that you will ever get to Marco Benevento. The show’s presenter, Kevin Black of Ithaca said, “It’s such a nice, intimate setting that it will be easy for everyone to see and hear Marco’s artistry.” DO NOT miss this special engagement. Doors at 7pm, Music starts at 8!
