Sophistafunk hosted the Phish after party at Funk n’ Waffles downtown Syracuse July 10th. The house was packed from front to back with bright eyes, smiling faces, and Sophistafunk kept the rage of the evenings Phish show rolling till a little past 2am.
Let me set up the scene for you – it’s one of the funkiest bands right now that can easily funk your face right off your head. And that’s on any given day, but this day they funk your face in their hometown at their home venue. They ALWAYS funk harder at home. Now add the element of a packed house of ragers coming off of a significantly rare and special Phish show down the road. Adrenaline was at a high in the house and Sophistafunk mopped it up and gave it right back.
Every song on the set list was a steamy performance. They had a lot of fellow musicians from every corner of the state show up to sit in on various songs. Old and new, they hit all the classics, including “Bruce Lee”,” Back To You”, “Duke of Errl”, “Wil’ Out”, “No More War”, and a “Tell My Baby” with ten or twenty extra helpings of DAMN SUGAR BABY!
This brings us toward the end of the show, which included Eman taking the mic for a fun filled cover of Bob Marley’s “Exodus,” but not before my favorite part of seeing Sophistafunk. I cannot express how much I enjoy seeing “Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll” live when Adam Gold can’t contain himself behind his keyboard for the buildup in the end jam so he grabs his MOOG keyboard and plays it center stage like a keytar. I get excited when I see him get up and I know it’s coming. It’s time to watch intently and prepare for a pimp slap of funk. I love it! Every time! It makes me laugh out loud. It makes me groove harder. You can’t help but get excited when you see Adam having that much fun and playing that hard. The energy of a Sophistafunk show at Funk n’ Waffles is infectious. When Adam goes off, the audience follows.
Even the sidewalk outside Funk n’ Waffles had something to offer. As you left, Spittin’ Sirens Mama G and Heidi Jane Siren were kicking some sidewalk style bluegrass on the busy Syracuse street! These ladies will pop up literally just about anywhere.
Sophistafunk puts on such a great show and packs the house every time. If you haven’t seen them yet, what are you waiting for? Stop what you are doing and go get your funk on! They are about to play a slew of shows in Upstate New York with some great festival appearances including:
August 5 – Backwoods Pondfest – Peru, NY
August 12 – Seedstock – Cortland, NY
September 9 – The Heron – Sherman, NY
